Marlborough

Located in the northeastern end of South Island, Marlborough is the region where New Zealand's recent winemaking tradition originated and its production is the one that best embodies New Zealand wine . In fact, about 77% of the vineyards in the whole country are concentrated in this region, despite the spread of the vine dating back only to the 70s. The most cultivated variety is Sauvignon Blanc , followed by Pinot Nero and Chardonnay .

It was the 1979 Sauvignon Blanc from Montana (the main producer in the country, now known as Bencott), with its unusual intensity, that aroused the interest of operators in the wine sector who immediately sensed the region's potential for the grape in question. Among these was also David Hohnen, founder of Cloudy Bay , the company destined to become one of the most prestigious in New Zealand, so much so that it was recently acquired by the LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton group.

Today Marlborough is considered by most critics to be the region where the best Sauvignon Blanc is produced in the world . The secret of Marlborogh's success lies in the maritime climate which guarantees a long and constant season during the grape ripening cycle, characterized however by strong temperature variations between day and night such as to enhance the aromatic range of Sauvignon Blanc, as in no other place in the world.
