Making wine has been part of the Coppola family tradition for generations. Agostino Coppola, Francis' grandfather, made wine in the basement of his New York apartment in concrete vats he had built himself. The wines that Francis Ford Coppola produces today in California are not the same as Agostino's, but are produced with the same spirit: that of being able to share them with friends and family.

When the Coppola family decided to build their winery in California, they commissioned Corey Beck, a winemaker from Sonoma County, to produce wines that represented the quintessence of the region. Produced from grapes from different and characteristic microclimates of Sonoma, the wines of the Director's Cut range, which take their name from the version of the film that best reflects the director's vision, express the true character of the denomination. Each bottle pays homage to the history of cinema, with its label that recalls a strip of zootrope, one of the first devices that reproduced the moving image. The strips reproduced on the labels are replicas of originals belonging to the personal collection of Francis Ford Coppola.
